A Short Interview

He was the man who has been maintaining school for more than 20 years. During my conversation with him, I can see how passionate he was about serving the school. When I told him that I just saw his school, this is how our conversation went….

He: What do you think about the ratio of students & teachers in the school?
Me:I don’t know how to answer this question and I diplomatically said "its good" knowing nothing about it.

He: Generally 20 students per teacher is the norm, but we have students who are handicapped and some who come from really poor families. So our teachers have to pay more attention to the kids Vs other school, hence I maintain a ratio of 1:15

Me: Its really nice to see how neatly everyone in the school is dressed…
He: Smiles for few secs….when they come to school without grooming their hair , I used to scare them saying "I'll cut your hair". When they come with improper clothing, I used to scare them saying "I will tear of your clothes". School provides clothes to all these students, I used to be very strict about every student coming in proper uniform. Previously we used give two pairs of clothes for each student, now we dropped it to one pair for new kids joining the school, hence I can't expect them to be in uniform always!

Me: How do you determine who gets an admission to the school?
He: With a subtle smile, I know what your asking. Your asking how do I ensure that only needy gets the admission, not the other. See when you cater food for 100 people in a party, there will be about 20% of food that goes waste, then you just give away that food to others. Similarly, there will be some kids whose parents can probably afford to buy clothes for their kids or pay fees to the school, but I am not concerned of it because there is always some overhead when you're doing things at scale. The fee I pay to the teacher is same whether he/she is teaching to 10 kids or 15 kids. In the end I am satisfied that a needy student is getting quality education.

When I was taking a pic of a boy (you can see in the gallery), I noted my observation to the administrator that the short is little too short. He said that in order to ensure that every student gets clothes, they have to cut down on amount of cloth they give to each student. As FYI, school donates raw material to each parent, they are expected to get it stitched for their kids

Btw, as FYI in his 25 years of service he never took a penny for the amount of time he served the school. This school runs on $0 administrative costs.

MEET THE PILLAR

SCHOOL HISTORY

SATYA SAI EDUCATIONAL & SERVICE SOCIETY school was established in 1993 with the help of devotees from Satya Sai Samithi, Nuzvid. Devotees from the Samithi (major contributors being Mr.Perla Someswara Rao & Mr.Boppana Verriah) have pooled in money, purchased an old structure and improvised it to make it a school premise. The school was established with a purpose of educating the underprivileged kids primarily serving to the kids whose parents were daily laborers, disabled or not in a position who can send their kids to school.
For last twenty years this school has been running on the interest earned from the lump sum amount that was deposited in 1993 and various other donors who helped in contributing towards the maintenance of the school. As years passed by, the school expenses have increased due to inflation, therefore the interest on the fixed deposit no longer suffices, as a result the money from the fixed deposit depleted.
This school provides the necessary education material, clothing and etc that are needed for these kids. However, due to lack funds, from past couple years it cut back on benefits such as providing school uniforms. With no major funding, this school is on the verge of closing down which will leave more than 150 underprivileged kids stranded.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Future of 150 under privileged kids are at stake! A 20 year old school (SRI SATYA SAI EDUCATIONAL & SERVICE SOCIETY / Soceity no. 705 of 1993) educating 150 underprivileged students in a small town in Nuzvid, A.P, India is at the risk of closing down, which will potentially leave these students stranded! Please help continue running this school to provide free education for kids who cannot afford. To fund, use this link gofund.me/helpedcuate150kids

I have come to know about this school through a friend of mine and verified it to be authentic through local contacts. I have received NGO certificate, audit reports from administrator which you can find in gallery below. I was able to get couple of laptops to teach the kids about computers.

The only purpose of the school is to educate the under privileged kids. Most of the parents of these kids work as daily laborers at mere pay for $2 per day and cannot afford to pay for their kids education. Currently this school is running out of funds to operate and is on the verge of closing out.

The goal is to make this school self-sustainable for next 5 years and potentially tie-up with any of the non-profit originations that can help improve the quality of the school and shown path to these kids beyond 7th class(school educated the kids until 7th). The immediate need is to prevent the school from shutting down and make it self-sustainable for five years. In order do that we need raise $50k and I am requesting for help to raise funds for the same.

There are multiple ways you can help.

1) Fund the school. Any amount helps, be it as little $5 is better than nothing. This is an immediate need for the school to operate. I'll provide receipts for all the donation made. Donate using gofund.me/helpedcuate150kids

2) Provide support to help raise funds for the school.

3) Like, Comment and share this post with your friends so they can help as well.

4) For the long-term benefit of the school, help me connect with non-profit organizations that are into supporting child education. Most of the folks I reached out are primarily into raising funds but are not aware of how to get such schools on-boarded in the non-profit org.

Some details & numbers on the school costs. This school runs on zero administrative costs and in a very frugal manner. I was able to get these details from the shoold administrator.

1) Text Books, Note books and stationary given to these 150 students - $2000. About $12 per kid.

2) Gaming material, office books and etc - $400

3) Each student is given sufficient cloth material to stitch two pairs of school uniform. $800. About

4) Electricity, drinking water and cleaning services etc - $800
5) Salaries to the school teacher. This is by far the most expense. Idea is to maintain quality of teaching. Eight teacher - $5000 per year

If we are able to get the funding, few upgrades we are planning for the school
1) Benches in all classrooms for kids to sit.
2) Provide quality water for kids in the school by putting up an RO system. Currently these kids are expected to get their own water. Due to lack of funds, school stopped providing water to kids.
